🏰 Live Like a Local in the Castle of Chios
Welcome to our neighborhood! You are staying in one of the few Byzantine castles in Greece that is still inhabited today. Here is how to experience the authentic charm of the Citadel (Kastro).
Historical Gems at Your Doorstep
Giustiniani Palace: Located right after the main entrance (Porta Maggiore), this building hosts art exhibitions and historical artifacts.
The Ottoman Baths (Hamam): A beautifully restored monument in the northern part of the Castle. The atmosphere inside is truly transportive.
St. George’s Church: A site of great history that once served as the “Eski Cami” (Old Mosque). Look for the intricate details in the courtyard.
Where to Eat & Drink (Local Favorites)
O Kafenes: Tucked away in the heart of the Castle on Agiou Georgiou street. It’s the perfect spot for traditional Greek coffee, ouzo, and homemade “meze” in a setting that feels like time has stopped.
To Tsikoudo: Located near the harbor entrance of the Castle. It is famous for its fresh seafood and traditional Chian recipes.
I Gonia (The Corner): An authentic “ouzeri” with excellent small plates. We highly recommend trying the local Souma (a Chian spirit distilled from figs).
Secret Tips for Your Walk
The Wall Walk: Don’t miss the chance to walk along the castle walls. It offers a stunning view of the harbor and the coast of Asia Minor, especially during the “golden hour” at sunset.
Aplotaria Shopping: Just a few steps outside the main gate lies Aplotaria, the city’s main commercial street. Visit the Mastihashop for authentic Mastic products.
Bakery Breakfast: Follow the scent of fresh bread to the local bakeries near Vounakiou Square for a morning “Tsoureki” (sweet bread) or a cheese pie made with local Mastelo cheese.
Note for guests: Most of these spots are within a 2-10 minute walking distance from your doorstep. Enjoy the wander!
